What exactly is FLORIN? In 1986 Aruba obtained its Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the florin, which was pegged to the U.S. dollar, became the official currency of the Aruba island. The Centrale Bank van Aruba control the responsibility for the issuance of the florin bank notes. During the period 1986 to 1989, transitorial bank notes were issued by the Bank. In 1990 and 1993, new sets of florin bank notes were issued designed by Mr. Evelino. The Aruba’s coins are also designed by Mr. Fingal”
When designing these bank notes of Aruba, the primary importance to the designer to use elements which are fundamentally Aruban. Aruban animal wild life were combined with decorative motives found on pre-columbian pottery, thus emphasizing the relation between past and present of this island. The Centrale Bank van Aruba started its operations on January 1, 1986, when Aruba obtained its status as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Centrale Bank van Aruba is a legal entity in itself with an autonomous position within Aruba’s public sector. The exchange rate of Aruba is 1.79 = US$ 1.00. This exchange rate has remained unchanged since the bank formed 1986.
The principle tasks of the Bank are to maintain the internal and external value of the florin and to promote the soundness and integrity of the financial system in Aruba.
The principal tasks of the Centrale Bank van Aruba
– Conduct monetary policy, regulating bank credit and liquidity;
– Supervise the financial banking systems;
– Issue bank notes;
– Bringing bank notes into circulation to meet the needs of businesses and the general public;
– Issuing treasury bills and government bonds as an agent for the government; and
– Monitoring economic and financial developments of Aruba.
– Regulating international payments according to the State Ordinance on foreign exchange transactions;
– Issue coins on behalf of the government of Aruba;
– Act as the banker for the government of Aruba;
– Be the central foreign exchange bank, regulate the flow of payments to and from other countries and offshore banks;
